Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines: Understanding the Difference

  • Canine distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus (DAP or DA2P) — typically given as a combination vaccine starting at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks, then again at one year, and every 1–3 years thereafter depending on the product used.

Core Vaccines for Cats

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) designates the following as core vaccines for cats:

  • Feline panleukopenia (FPV) — also called feline distemper; part of the FVRCP combination vaccine, started at 6–8 weeks and boosted through 16 weeks, then at one year, then every 1–3 years.
