What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients — commonly shortened to macros — are the three main classes of nutrients that provide calories and serve as the raw materials for nearly every function in the body. They are protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Unlike micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), which the body needs in small amounts, macronutrients are required in relatively large quantities every day.

Protein: Structure, Repair, and More

Protein is made up of smaller units called amino acids. The body uses amino acids to build and repair muscle tissue, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and transport molecules through the bloodstream. Of the 20 amino acids involved in human physiology, nine are considered essential — meaning the body cannot synthesize them on its own and must obtain them through food.

Fat: Far More Than a Source of Calories

Dietary fat provides 9 calories per gram — more than protein or carbohydrates — but its importance extends well beyond energy density. Fat is essential for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), producing hormones, maintaining cell membrane integrity, and supporting brain function.

The main types of dietary fat differ in their chemical structure and effects on health:

  • Unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) are found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. These are generally associated with favorable cardiovascular outcomes in research.
  • Saturated fats are found primarily in animal products and some tropical oils. Current evidence suggests limiting intake relative to unsaturated sources, though the picture is nuanced and continues to be studied.
